Miles for Myels

The purpose of the race is to raise money and awareness for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Therapy. In addition to honoring the main cause behind the race, the name “Miles for Myels” also connects to some of the diseases that HSCT can be used to treat. In MS, as in many other autoimmune disorders, the body’s immune system attacks the myelin sheath, a covering on the nerves that allows nerves to effectively carry impulses through the body. When this sheath is damaged, the body can no longer carry important neural messages, making simple actions such as walking, talking, and eating extremely difficult. Therefore, the name ‘Miles for Myels’ represents not only the therapy that we are hoping to raise money for, but also the many disorders that this therapy can be used to treat.

Radford University Sig Ep Brothers by the Wayside is an organization that supports those in need. The organization hosts an annual golf tournament to raise money for those that need temporary help due to a unforeseen illness or employment situation. For more info visit their site here.
