The 2020 Virtual RST Race FAQ’s

What will event weekend look like?
All athletes registered for the 2020 RST event have been converted to the Virtual RST and there’s no additional action needed by the athlete. The Virtual Reston Sprint Triathlon will be completed by athletes in their own time, in their own way, anytime between July 30th and August 2nd. Yes, that means no 5 am wake up alarm! Athletes will choose their own start and finish lines and can participate either in Reston or from any location across the country!
While the traditional run course for RST is accessible to the public, athletes may swim, bike and/or run on any course of their choosing. Just be safe! At the conclusion of the race weekend, we will hold a Facebook Live event from a location in Reston on Sunday afternoon, August 2nd! We will announce Spirit Winners, raffles, silent auction winners, and give you a chance to tell your “Why I Tri” story with special appearances by our Directors and Captains.
What are the guidelines?
Based on your feedback, we have added options to make it easy to participate and stay active during this challenging time. Athletes will choose their own experience and set a goal to crush it!
Options include:
  • Run – Bike – Run
  • Bike – Run – Bike
  • Swim – Bike – Run
  • Athlete’s Choice – Bike – Run
Athlete’s choice means that you may alternatively opt for an exercise of your choosing for this leg of the event. For the bike portion, athletes may use a stationary bike or bike outside. Walking instead of running is an option! Athletes will complete their distance between July 30th and August 2nd. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to cheer you on!
The default category is Virtual Run – Bike – Run. If you would like to change you category, click here.
How does timing work?
Timing will be completed on the athlete’s device of choice (smart phone, smart watch, manual time, etc.). Athletes will have the opportunity to log their scores and compare their rankings. Athletes may also join our Strava RST Club to connect with another athletes.
What about awards?
Unlike a traditional race, awards will be spirit based. Athletes will have the opportunity to share their story, promote positivity and help keep the sport of triathlon thrive in Northern Virginia and across the country through social media. Hashtags and instructions will follow as we draw closer to race weekend!
How about swag and medals?
RST swag and the athlete finisher’s medal will be picked up in a socially distanced fashion one week prior to race weekend. Over the next few weeks, as Phase 2 progresses and our businesses begin reopening, we will provide more information about locations and times.
New for 2020 athletes will be provided with a virtual goody bag stocked with coupons and discounts for local businesses and athletic gear companies. If you know of a business that would like to be included please reach out!

We’ve missed seeing our athletes at our monthly Meetups and are hearing that you might appreciate some motivation to pick up your training. Our weekly call series kicks off this Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the first 100 attendees each week. Topics range from how to “get started” as your gym opens, bike tips, stretching, to how to train without a pool. And our virtual Meetups will feature a wide range of guest speakers including our partners from BASE Salts and 2016 Olympic Team Triathlete, Joe Maloy.
RST Meetup #2 – Tuesday, June 30 at 7:00 pm ET: Register or Join Here
Will this race count toward my prior RST participation and awards?
Yes! This race is sanctioned and supported by USA Triathlon and participation will count towards your RST 5 and 10 Star accolades. All 10 year athletes and above are encouraged to join our Ambassador Program. Contact us for more info.
You mentioned giving back and volunteering. How else I participate and join RST in helping our local community?
